Direct to Film (DTF) Printing Explained

Sunday 19 March 2023 by Sophie Hainsworth

Whether you’re a printing expert or a novice, you may have heard of DTF printing. You may, however, not be so familiar with how it works or looks.

DTF stands for Direct to Film. This technique prints on a particular transfer film. Artwork is then printed on the reverse side of the film, after which a hot melt powder is applied. The powder is an adhesive, helping the ink bond to the garment when it goes into a heat press. This process can work in colour as well as white ink.

DTF is a very versatile printing method. You can heat press your design onto garments, which works just as well on other materials. You may wonder why it's so versatile. The ink is semi-cured before it is bonded to the garment. This means that hot wet ink doesn't touch the garment. Due to its nature, when it touches certain materials or fabric dyes it can cause a chemical reaction. This process stops that being possible.

What are the Pros and Cons of DTF?

Pros

  • Can print on T-shirts of any colour or fabric
  • Very elastic prints wont crack when stretching fabric
  • Very durable with high wash and wear resistance
  • Can print finer details
  • Can print multicolour

Cons

  • This technique is more expensive as each print requires transfer material rather than printing wet ink directly onto a garment
  • The process is more time-consuming than printing wet ink directly onto a garment due to having to print onto the transfer material
